A report on the progress of the United Jewish Appeal campaign in the United States was given to the Jewish Agency executive today by Rabbi Herbert Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the UJA.
Rabbi Friedman revealed that $65,000,000 in cash had been raised during the first half of 1956, more than the entire cash total raised in 1955. If the same rate continues, he pointed out, the Appeal will raise more cash this year than ever before in its history.
In a breakdown of the figures, Rabbi Friedman said $28,000,000 had been taken in by the regular campaign, $30,000,000 had been raised by community loans from banks and $7,500,000 had been contributed to the special “survival fund.” He praised the devoted work of the thousands of national and lay leaders and volunteer workers throughout the United States, without whose efforts, he said, the 1956 record would not have been achieved.
