The Jewish Agency in Jerusalem today ordered the closing of its offices in Algeria, and instructed its last two emissaries there to leave the country.
There were 18 Jewish Agency officials in Algeria last month. But, in view of the mass emigration of Jews from the country, and the dangerous situation there, the executive of the Agency in Jerusalem decided to wind up the offices it maintained in several Algerian cities.
The problem of the many thousands of Jewish refugees from Algeria who have come to France, and their integration into communal life in the French Jewish communities, will be the subject of an extensive study at a two-day Jewish conference in September. The conference, scheduled for September 16-17 near Grenoble. will be attended by 200 delegates from Jewish welfare agencies and from Jewish communities from all parts of France.
The delegates also will consider such specifically Jewish matters as the supply of rabbis, religious equipment and cultural facilities by the French Jewish community which has nearly doubled in size during the postwar years. The conference was organized by the Fonds Social Juif Junifie, the central French Jewish welfare agency, which operates in conjunction with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in coordinating Jewish social and cultural programs in France.
