The number of young American and Canadian Jews coming to Israel in the new “Service to the People” program of the Jewish Agency will total 200 by the end of 1965, Eliahu Dobkin, member of the Jewish Agency executive, reported today.
He said that it was important that future participants begin their Hebrew language studies while still in America and that ways to improve the program would be the subject of a special meeting between Jerusalem and New York Jewish Agency executive members during a forthcoming Agency plenary meeting in Jerusalem at the end of November.
Mr. Dobkin said that 150 had already arrived in Israel — 60 came four months ago and 90 three weeks ago. Of the first 150, who learned Hebrew either in accelerated U1pan courses or in Israeli collectives, about one-third are in social work, another third teaching English and science in Negev schools and the others working in various special fields, including speech deficiency aid and city planning.
