The Jewish Agency executive, after hearing today from Dr. Nanum Goldmann his views on protesting against Soviet suppression of Jewish religion and culture, issued a brief communique stating: “The executive heard with satisfaction Dr. Goldmann’s explanation of his position on the issue in which there has been no change.”
The meeting of the Jewish Agency executive today was devoted almost entirely to the recent statement made by Dr. Goldmann at a press conference in New York in which he cautioned against “distortions” in Jewish protests on behalf of Soviet Jewry. Dr. Goldmann, who is the president of the Jewish Agency, told the executive today that there was no change in his basic position about the discriminations against Jews in the Soviet Union. The differences, he said, may concern only tactics of fighting those discriminations. He added that his opinion on the matter coincided with the opinion of the Israel Government and of major Jewish organizations.
The question of Soviet Jewry will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of the Coordinating Committee of the Jewish Agency and the Israel Government. In the meantime Dr. Goldmann met today with Prime Minister Levi Eshkol.
