American machinery, irrigation equipment and know-how will be brought to the forefront in the reclamation of the Negev, Israel’s southern agricultural and mining frontier, as a result of a $2,000,000 contract signed today by the Jewish Agency and Worthington Corporation of Harrison. New Jersey:
The purchase is being made by the Jewish Agency for the Mekerot Water Co., a public agency engaged in the development of water resources in Israel. The funds have been supplied through the United Jewish Appeal. The contract is considered a decisive step in Israel’s vast irrigation and engineering project designed to open the Negev to tens of thousands of new settlers and place the nation on the road to economic self-sufficiency.
Speaking for the Jewish Agency at the signing. Gottlieb Hammer, executive director, declared: “Worthington has entered more than just another business arrangement. You are assisting in the economic development of Israel. Raising standards of living everywhere is in line with the American tradition of helping those who help themselves. The people of Israel, sharing the same view, have demonstrated a sincerity, fortitude and ingenuity which has long aroused the admiration of all Americans.”
