Negotiations have begun in Paris for the purchase of a large building in the heart of the city to serve as an Institute of Israeli Culture, Dr. Hayim Greenberg, chairman of the Jewish Agency’s cultural department, revealed here today. It is expected that the new center will open early next year.
The French Foreign Ministry has said it would view the new undertaking with “benevolent interest.” The center will be financed by the Jewish Agency and supported through private gifts and will not be directly connected with the Israel Government. The center will house a theatre, library, restaurant and club facilities and will seek to promote interest in Israeli culture among the French people.
Dr. Greenberg stated that in previous dispatches there has been some confusion regarding the budget allocation for the year 1951-52 for the Department of Culture and Education in the diaspora of the World Zionist Organization. He said that 200,000 Israeli pounds ($560,000) have been allocated for this purpose.
