Dr. Israel Goldstein, treasurer of the Jewish Agency today issued a Passover statement to the Jewish community of the United States declaring that the “era between Passover, 1943, and Passover, 1949, was an epoch-making period of glory in Jewish history, not only politically but also because of the unprecedented record of immigration.”
Dr. Goldstein’s statement added that “the burden which immigration places upon the young nation is only appreciable when one bears in mind that it is equivalent to an immigration of 35,000,000 to the United States in one year. The gifts of American Jews to the United Jewish Appeal will determine whether the immigrants who arrived during the year can be absorbed and how many mere can come.
“It requires $2,000 to take care of one immigrant during the first year until he stands on his own feet. American Jews can thus measure how much they are helping and how much they are denying help,” the statement concluded.
