Jewish Agency Will Testify at Anglo-u.s. Inquiry; Congress to Be Held in Palestine

The Jewish Agency has finally decided to appear before the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, when it holds hearings here, next month, Moshe Shertok, political chief of the Jewish Agency, announced today, disclosing at the same time that the World Zionist Congress will be held in Palestine this Summer.

Shertok spoke before the opening session of the Assefath Hanivchatim, the Jewish National Assembly, where he delivered a report on Zionist political activities in Washington, London, Jerusalem and the Middle East during the past few months. He also reported that the Palestine Government has assured the Agency that it will extend visas and other facilities to delegates planning to attend the Congress.

The Assembly was asked to approve a $3,000,000 budget to finance the activities of the Jewish National Council for the current year, of which $1,800,000 will be spent for education and $800,000 for health and social welfare institutions. An expansion of the Council’s activities was proposed by David Remez, its chairman, who urged the imposition of a one percent tax on every Jewish taxpayer to cover the additional costs. Remez also asked institution of a bonus system for mothers to increase the birth rate.

A demand that the Jewish community act to secure the return to Palestine of the deportees in Eritrea was placed before the Assembly by Rabbi Tohurz, speaking on behalf of the families of the detainees. He also urged appointment of a committee to investigate conditions in the camp.
