THE GALT COUNCIL, BY A VOTE OF 7 TO 2, DECLINED MONDAY NIGHT TO ACCEPT THE RESIGNATION OF ALDERMAN SAMUEL LUNENFELD, OFFERED AFTER HE HAD BEEN PUBLICLY ATTACKED BY MAYOR SERVISS BECAUSE HE IS JEWISH.
“THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GALT AND THE MAYOR AND THE COUNCIL BEAR NO MALICE OR PREJUDICE WHATSOEVER TOWARD THE JEWISH RACE OR THE PEOPLE OF ANY OTHER CREED,” SAID THE COUNCIL RESOLUTION. MAYOR SERVISS ADDED IN A STATEMENT, “I HAD NO INTENTION THAT MY REMARKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN AS AN INSULT TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE.”
MR. LUNENFELD, AN INDUSTRIALIST, HEADED THE ALDERMANIC POLL IN GALT IN THE LAST MUNICIPAL ELECTION AND HAS SERVED EIGHT MONTHS OF HIS TERM.
