The Jewish Board of Guardians celebrated its centenary last night with a dinner at which plans were announced to raise an endowment fund of 500,000 pounds.
Justice Seymour E. Karminsky, president of the board, presided at the dinner which was addressed also by Derek Walker, Minister of Health, Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie and others. Guests included the Viscount and Viscountess Bearsted, Sir Herbert and Lady Cohen, and the Marchese and Marchioness of Reading.
When the Board was founded a century ago, its work was mainly with the Jewish immigrants pouring into the London East End from Central and Eastern Europe. The goal then was to enable the newcomers to learn a trade and set up their own businesses. The Board’s principal activities now are apprentice programs for Jewish youth, job placements and protection of the general welfare of the indigent and of women, girls and children.
