Two synagogues and a drug store in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Buenos Aires were extensively damaged by bomb explosions this weekend, according to reports reaching here from the Argentine capital. No one was injured. The two synagogues hit were the Max Nordau Synagogue on Murillo Street and the Sephardic Community Synagogue on Camargo Street. The incidents, according to the reports, were the latest in a series of bombings of Jewish buildings.
Meanwhile the mother of Marcelo Ariel Gelman, 20, and Nora Eva Gelman, 19, presented a writ of habeas corpus in Federal Court in Buenos Aires in an effort to locate her two daughters who together with Marcelo’s pregnant wife were kidnapped last week from their homes by six armed men believed to be members of a right-wing death squad.
Juan Gelman, the father of Marcelo and Nora, a leading Jewish Argentine poet and Journalist, was forced to flee Argentina last year after receiving a death threat from an extreme right-wing organization, the Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance (AAA). Juan Gelman is now living in exile in Rome.
