The Jewish cemetery in the Soviet-held sector of Berlin was desecrated today for the third time. Sixteen tombstones were removed. The East Berlin police headquarters said that an investigation has been started but that no arrests have been made as yet.
A spokesman for the Berlin Jewish Community said: “We do not suspect that an organized political group has committed the crime but rather that certain incorrigible anti-Semites are at work again in all four sectors of Berlin.” A cemetery official commented that the stones pushed over were “massive marble monuments.” The damage can “scarcely have been done by playing children, the explanation so often given for such anti-Semitic outrages,” the official added.
