Announcement of the formation of a committee of the Friends of the Hebrew University was one of several reports of Jewish developments today in West Germany. The other developments included the opening of a Jewish Youth Center in Munich and announcement of plans for a Jewish Community Center in Essen to serve Jews in the North-Rhine Westphalia area.
Prof. Franz Boehm, member of the compensation committee in the West German Parliament, Prof. A. Coing vice-president of Frankfurt University, Prof. Theodor Adorno, German sociologist, and Prof. Herbert Lewin, president of the Association of Jewish Communities in Hesse, were listed as honorary members of the new Hebrew University Committee group with headquarters in Frankfurt.
The Munich center will provide recreational facilities for the 300 Jewish adolescents and youth and 100 children under 13 living in Munich. Funds for the project were provided by the Central Agency of Jews in Germany, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims and the City of Munich.
The Jewish Center in Essen, on which construction was expected to start next spring, will include a synagogue seating 200 persons, living quarters for a rabbi and cantor and rooms for social and lecture purposes.
