Chaplain Samuel Sobel, Jewish chaplain with the First Marine Division in Korea, has been slightly wounded by enemy fire and has been awarded the Purple Heart Medal, according to word received here by the National Jewish Welfare Board. Chaplain Sobel was hit by shrapnel in the battle of Vegas on March 29th. He is now on his way back to the United States for a new assignment at Parris Island, S. C.
Simultaneously, word was received that Chaplain Sobel has also been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor and “for meritorious achievements in connection with operations against the enemy.” Commissioned by the Navy in July 1945, Chaplain Sobel has served at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Camp Lejeune, N. C., Great Lakes Nasal Training Station, III, and at the San Diego Naval Training Center. He is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
