The Chairman of the first Jewish Region in the Ukraine submitted a report on the work in the Region to the last meeting of the National Minorities Section of the Ukrainian Central Executive Committee.
He dealt in particular with the questions of the relations between the Jewish and non-Jewish peasants in the Region. About 15 per cent, of the population in the Jewish Region is non-Jewish. It there were disputes in the beginning between the Jewish and the Ukrainian peasants in the Region, he said these no longer existed. The Ukrainian village Soviets, which are included in the Jewish Region, are realizing that they are now better attended to than when they were in the Ukrainian Region. For example, before the Jewish Region was organized, only 26 per cent, of the Ukrainian children in the area went to school. Now about 60 per cent of the Ukrainian children are at school.
The Ukrainian peasants themselves say that they have gained by being included in the Jewish Region.
Co-operative activity in the Region, the report stated, is developing favorably. The Region now has seven agricultural credit institutions and nine cooperative distributing organizations. Complaint is made of the lack of financial means which is hindering the work of the administrative bodies of the Region.
