Morris B. Abram, president of the American Jewish Committee, hailed as “a victory for the Rule of Law” the news that the West German Cabinet had voted unanimously to support the proposed extension of the Statute of Limitations for the prosecution of Nazi war criminals beyond the May 7 deadline. He had made a personal appeal for such extension last month in a visit to Justice Minister Ewald Bucher in Bonn.
Mr. Abram, a noted constitutional lawyer who served on the prosecution staff of the Nuremberg trials, said today. “We applaud the action of the West German Cabinet, and hope that the Bundestag will translate this recommendation into law. We are particularly happy that this is being done within the framework of the Rule of Law, to which we at the American Jewish Committee are completely dedicated,” In his visit with Dr. Bucher on January 18, Mr. Abram urged that the Statute of Limitations be extended to the year 1975.
