A split has developed in the Jewish Communist organization, Jewish Unity, as a result of the Communist campaign against Jews, Zionists and Israel.
The larger section of the membership broke away when the organization refused to condemn the Soviet campaign. The dissident group has begun distributing leaflets urging the Jews not to vote for the Austrian Communist ticket in the forthcoming Austrian national elections, stating that such a ballot would amount to a “vote for hangmen of Jewry.” The former pro-Communists charge that in its present form Communism does not differ from Nazism.
Meanwhile, the right-wing weekly Wiener Samstag, which in recent issues has been attacking Jews, published a violent diatribe against Jewish refugees from the East who “contribute largely to plundering and undermining the Austrian economy.” The neo-Nazi sheet says that whenever “Jewish smugglers are apprehended by police officials, there is an uproar about reviving anti-Semitism in Austria.”
