Crisis conditions are facing the larger Jewish communities which were affected by the Missouri River floods, although life in the area is gradually returning to normal. All communal activities, including scheduled meeting of the United Jewish Appeal, had to be cancelled on account of the crisis situation.

The Jewish community center in Sioux City has been closed temporarily. One of the local synagogues served as the city’s emergency feeding station during the flood. On Easter Sunday the Jews of Sioux City took over most of the key defense points in fighting the flood in order to enable the Christians to observe Easter Sunday at church. The Jewish community center was turned over to the Red Cross for its headquarters.
