The results already available from 68 towns and townships in Congress Poland where Jewish communal elections took place on Wednesday, show that the Agudath Israel has obtained 193 seats, the Zionists 138, the artisans 115, the Mizrachi 54, the non-partisan Religious Party 46, the non-Agudist Hassidim 28, the Right Poale Zion 19, the Left Poale Zion 11, the Agudist Labour Party Poale Agudah 10, the Jewish merchants 9 and various smaller parties 36.
In the larger communities the Zionists have obtained a majority, but in the smaller communities the Agudah has a majority. In many cases the Zionists boycotted the elections as a protest against the application of Paragraph 20 of the Jewish Community Law, under which non-religious Jews were excluded from membership of the Community and from the right to vote.
The “clericalists” who are opposed to secular culture have obtained 295 seats so far, and the Zionists and the various progressive groups have secured 379 seats.
In Warsaw and Lodz the elections will take place on Wednesday, the 27th. inst. Clashes are frequent between the opposing parties and the police have repeatedly had to intervene to separate them.
