The local Jewish community was preparing today to send a precious gift of 30 ancient Torah Scrolls to Israel to overcome the shortage of Scrolls following the extermination of Sofrim (scribes) in Poland and Germany. Most of the Scrolls are more than 300 years old and were brought to Denmark by the first Jewish settlers who came from Hamburg and Luebeck in the second half of the 17th century. When the Nazis launched their program in Denmark, in October 1943, members of the Danish resistance movement saved the Scrolls in the Copenhagen Synagogue and concealed them in the crypt of the Trinitansis Church.
