The American Jewish Congress regional executive here adopted a resolution denouncing compulsory Sunday observance laws as, “violating the principle of religious liberty by compelling persons to adhere to a law, the motivation and operation of which is basically religious.”
The resolution which will be forwarded to Gov. Meyner and members of the State Legislature declared: “Religious liberty is an indispensable aspect of democratic freedom and indeed the very foundation of American democracy. As a nation of people attached to many different religious faiths or to none, we owe our survival and our unity to the universal acceptance of the uniquely American concept that the relationship between man and God is not and may not be subject to government control or regulation.
The American Jewish Congress urged members of the Legislature to adopt amendments to any Sunday observance law,” exempting from the operation of those laws, persons whose religious convictions compel them to observe a day other than Sunday as a religious day of rest.”
