The American Jewish Congress was praised by the New York Times today for giving a check for $1, 200 to Mayor John V. Lindsay representing 10 percent of the real estate tax on the organization’s headquarters before it became the Stephen Wise Congress House and thus tax exempt.
The editorial noted that the organization’s treasurer, Frank Abrams, had declared that the Congress believed strongly “that religious, educational and other tax-exempt institutions in a position to do so have a great moral obligation to give voluntarily of their resources to support the needs of the community at large.” The editorial said that perhaps other groups which benefitted from city services and city tax exemption “will be moved to come forward.”
