The American Jewish Congress today announced that it has filed suit with the State Commission Against Discrimination against two upstate New York resets charged with illegal discriminatory advertising.
The A.J.C. accused the Williams Lake Hotel, located in Rosendale, Ulster Country, and Hidden Valley, a dude ranch on Lake Luzerne, Warren Country, with illegally discouraging Jewish patronage by using such phrases as “near churches” and “bus to churches” in their advertisements.
The American Jewish Congress action was the first test of this type of advertising since District Attorney Frank S. Hogan, in 1943, declared the term “restricted” as used in resort advertising, to be a violation of the State Civil Rights Law. New York newspapers, following Mr. Hogan’s ruling, refused to accept advertising so worded.
