The defeat of the Doyle Resolution on procedures to be followed by Congressional investigation committees was urged here today at the two-day joint quarterly meeting of the American Jewish Congress’ national administrative and executive committees. The Doyle Resolution was characterized as “a sop designed to head off genuinely effective legislation” in setting up fair procedures for Congressional committees.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, declared at last night’s session that “the uncertainty and apprehension caused by American policy in the Middle East must be regarded as a contributory factor to such an outbreak of violence along Israel’s borders as the Gaza incident now being considered by the United Nations Security Council.” At the same time, Dr. Goldstein asserted, “it is clear to any objective reader of the report made by Major General E.L.M. Burns, Palestine truce chief, to the Security Council, that there is unquestionable validity to Israel’s contention that the Gaza affair must be evaluated in the light of the persistent and numerous provocations by Egypt.”
Judge Justine Polier, national vice-president and head of the AJC’s Women’s Division, reported that more than 45 new AJC chapters have been chartered in the past 18 months and that membership enrollment in all parts of the country has increased significantly.
