A complaint that summer resorts in New York, New Jersey and New England are violating the civil rights law of this state was lodged by the American Jewish Congress with the New York State Commission Against Discrimination. In its complaint, the A.J.C. alleged that 49 resorts were circumventing the advertising policies of New York City newspapers by substituting the phrases “near churches,” “near Christian churches,” and “Protestant and Catholic churches nearby” for the terms “selected clientele,” restricted clientele” and other phrases declared unlawful.
Similar complaints were directed to the New Jersey Civil Right Commission, the Massa Chusetts Committee Against Discrimination. the Connecticut Commission on Civil Rights and the Rhode Island Fair Employment Practices Commission, urging them to investigate and take action against hotels over which they have jurisdiction.
