The American Jewish Congress today called upon the newly formed New York City Commission on Intergroup Relations to “concentrate on the problems of prejudice and on those discriminatory practices that are not now illegal.” This recommendation was made as part of a program submitted by the AJC to a meeting of the Commission.
The AJC proposals to the 15-man municipal agency pointed out that “in the interest of maintaining maximum efficiency and effectiveness, the Commission should not, by and large, concentrate its efforts on the problems of discrimination that are within the jurisdiction of other regulatory agencies, such as the State. Commission Against Discrimination and the New York State Department of Education. The Commission should not dissipate its resources in action against discriminatory manifestations that are already prohibited by law.
