The American Jewish Congress today declared in telegrams to majority and minority leaders of the Senate and House that the inclusion of religious colleges in the Federal Aid to Education Bill is violative of the Constitutional guarantee of the separation of church and state.
“It also violates the principle that religious institutions must be supported by voluntary contributions of their adherents and that tax funds may be expended only for institutions which are subject to public regulation and control,” the telegram stated. The message was sent following approval of Senate and House conferees of the inclusion of sectarian colleges in the bill for aid to higher education.
