Two thousand Jewish war veterans and members of the ladies auxiliaries of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States gathered today at the opening of the 48th national convention of the JWV, which will continue through Sunday.
“The tremendous part that those of Jewish faith have played in the drama of American independence” was stressed by Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines, Administrator of Veteran Affairs, in an address prepared for delivery before the convention tomorrow.
“The history of Jewish patriotism and valor in America is well known to me,” Gen. Hines declared. “History reminds us of the unselfish service and patriotic devotion of Americans of the Jewish faith to our country, who love America better than their own lives. In all the wars of our republic, your coreligionists have made splendid contributions to our Armed Forces, and the present war is no exception. Your roster lists the names of some of America’s outstanding heroes.”
Gen. Hines praised the record of the Jewish War Veterans in recent months, citing their donation of several fighter planes and ambulances to the army, their purchase of war bonds, and their Red Cross and civilian defense work. He outlined to the veterans the plans being made for the training and care of demobilized soldiers.
