The London Times, which has never supported the Zionist demands for free Palestine immigration and for the establishment of a Jewish State, today came out with an editorial proposing that Jews be given control over immigration into a partitioned Palestine.
Pointing out that both Jews and Arabs have rejected the Morrison plan, and that the United States favors the establishment of a “viable Jewish state,” the paper appeals to the government “in justice alike to the requirements of the times and to British troops and police in Palestine to explore the possibilities of a final solution, which almost certainly will be found only through some practical formula of partition.”
The editorial stresses that the resolutions adopted by the Zionist Congress at Basle mark “a disturbing new phase,” revealing a breach between the Zionist and the British interpretations of the mandate which will be most difficult to bridge.” It hails, however, the resolutions condemning terrorism, voicing the hope that it will be effective, despite the fact “that its influence will be weakened by the endorsement of the terrorists’ objective: liberation of an oppressed people.”
Since a Jewish state already exists de facto if not de jure, it is therefore preferable from every point of view that control over immigration be vested in Jewish hands, the paper concludes.
