Criticism of Jewish political leaders in Poland for declaring that they do not welcome intervention by American Jewish leaders with the Polish ambassador for ameliorating the present economic plight of Polish Jewry, is contained in an editorial in Friday’s issue of the New York Day.
“When American Jews were needed to protest against Polish atrocities they were welcome,” says the editorial. “When the representatives of American Jewry were needed in Versailles to obtain national minority rights for the Jews of Poland they were more than welcome. But now when American Jews want to see that which was promised Polish Jewry be carried out, they are told that it is none of their business. Queer logic.
“The Jews of America haven’t the least desire to force their favors upon the Jews in Poland. If the Polish Jews really don’t want anyone in America to defend them, well and good. But if the opposition to Jewish help from America comes, as we imagine, not from the masses, but from the politicians, who hate to see ‘foreigners’ accomplish those things which they themselves couldn’t accomplish, then it is the duty of responsible Jewish public opinion in Poland to clear up the situation so that we here on this side of the ocean may know exactly what’s what.”
