A delegation of Jewish religious and communal leaders today called at the Foreign Office to bring to the attention of the British Government the precarious situation of the Jews of Iraq as a result of the recently adopted anti-Jewish legislation of the Iraqi Government. The deputation was received by Kenneth Younger, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who is currently responsible for Middle East Affairs in the Foreign Office.
A meeting of the leaders of the British Zionist Federation adopted a resolution calling on the British Government to express its displeasure to the Iraqi Government over the manner in which the Arab state treats its Jews. Expressing admiration for the sacrifices made by Israel in accepting the Iraqi immigrants, the Zionist leaders urged all British Jews to give fullest support to the Joint Palestine Appeal.
“The serious position of the Jews of Iraq which might lead to similar developments in other Arab countries, makes it imperative that every effort be made to achieve a general peace settlement between Israel and the Arab states, ” H. Goodman, political secretary of the Agudas Israel Organization, said today at a meeting of the European executive of the organization.
