The Maniu government, for the first time since it assumed power, was criticized by a Jewish deputy during the parliament discussion on the government budget.
Deputy Joseph Fischer of the Club of Jewish Deputies drew attention to the fact that the new government has not made any changes in the ridiculously small allotments in the budget for Jewish cultural purposes. He asked the government party why it does not fulfill what it promised to do when it was the opposition party. The new budget, he stated, contains the same small items for Jewish religious purposes, as compared with the liberal allotments for the needs of the other religious institutions. The Club of Jewish Deputies will vote for the budget this time, he declared, but this should not be interpreted as a precedent for the future, he declared.
Prime Minister Maniu when interviewed by the representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, stated that the Jewish population of Roumania may be assured that its wishes will at all time meet with a courteous consideration and attention on the part of the government. The government will remain faithful to its previous declarations in regard to the Jewish question. It therefore believes it unnecessary to make new declarations as the action will speak for itself, he stated.
