Chief Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits announced today the establishment of a Jewish educational trust to expand and improve Jewish education in Britain. He said about $3 million has already been pledged to the project which hopes to enroll some 13,000 pupils in Jewish primary and secondary schools at the end of its first phase, five years hence. Dr. Jakobovits said the trust would provide new schools and would increase the capacity of existing schools commensurate with the demands of Jewish parents. He said he hoped the schools would qualify for state aid in due time so that they could devote the available resources to Hebrew and Jewish studies. More than half of the Jewish school age population in Britain does not receive any significant Jewish education.
