In spite of the emigration program in North Africa under which the Jewish Agency sends about 30,000 Jews to Israel each year the normal population rise in these countries offsets this emigration and conditions remain acute in the lands of Morocco, Tunis and Algiers, Rabbi Benjamin Gorodetzky personal representative of Lubavitcher Rabbi, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, stated upon his arrival here.
Rabbi Gorodetzky is overseas coordinator of the education and rehabilitation program sponsored by the Lubavitcher Rabbi which cares for the educational religious and welfare needs of the Jews in Europe and North Africa. In his report he lauded the work of the Joint Distribution Committee and urged continued assistance to North African Jewry The Lubavitcher program in North Africa embraces 74 schools with over 4,000 children who are taught elementary and vocational subjects. Publications in French and Hebrew, specifically designed for these backward countries, have been printed as part of this program which is aided largely by the JDC.
