Both French officials responsible for Tunisian policy and Tunisian officials have denied, in meetings with World Jewish Congress representatives, that the Tunisian authorities would make any attempts to halt the emigration of Jews from the North African country. These statements were made to A.L. Easterman, political director of the WJC, and M.A. Kaplan, secretary of the French section of the Congress.
M. Basdevant, deputy director of the French Ministry for Tunisian and Moroccan Affairs, told the WJC representatives that there is no foundation to reports that the Tunisian Government has informed the French authorities that it desires to see an end put to Jewish emigration from Tunisia. Tunisian official circles have also denied rumors to the effect that they intended to prevent such emigration. It was reaffirmed. WJC officials said here, that Tunisian Jews would be treated just as other citizens, in conformity with the French-Tunisian agreement for greater autonomy for the Moslem country.
