The Jerusalem Magistrates Court has extended the detention of a 22-year-old supporter of the Jewish extremist group Kach. The man was arrested last week on suspicion that he was planning to attack Arabs in the Old City.
Doron Goldin was arrested near the Mandlebaum Gate of the Old City in Jerusalem. The site is near the Ra’ayon Hayehudi yeshiva, which was founded by the Kach movement, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.
The government last year declared the Kach and Kahane Chai movements illegal.
In Goldin’s possession were two knives and materials to make Molotov cocktails, police said.
Police think the suspect planned to construct and throw the firebombs at Palestinians in eastern Jerusalem or to pass the materials on to someone else who would.
Goldin also had with him leaflets urging people not to serve in the Israel Defense Force, to rebel against the government and to take part in a pilgrimage to the grace of Baruch Goldstein, the Kiryat Arba settler who killed 29 Muslim worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron one year ago.
Goldin, a physics student, said he did not know that the materials in his possession were explosive, police said. He said he intended to use them to open a clogged drain in his home in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv.
Police said it was unlikely that Goldin would bring or buy such materials in Jerusalem to clear a clog.
