Estimating that there are about 150,000 Jewish farmers in the United States, Dr. Gabriel Davidson, managing director of the Jewish Agricultural Society, addressing the Annual Field Day of South Jersey farm settlers, revealed that “among Jewish farmers tenancy is almost non-existent.” He emphasized that Jewish farms are operated by the owner and his family, with a minimum of hired help.
Dr. Davidson also reported that there has been a rapid increase of Jewish settlers in the Vineland area during the past seven years. Most of the new settlers are displaced Jews who were admitted to the United States. Prof. J.S. Joffe, soil specialist at the New Jersey State Agricultural Collage, spoke of the present agricultural conditions and possibilities in Israel and described agricultural potentialities in the Near East, on the basis of an investigation he conducted several months ago.
