A suit accusing the chief of police of Fall River, Mass., of religious discrimination against a Sabbath-observing mill owner will be heard in Superior Court here. Superior Court Justice Charles S. Bolster today ordered Fall River Police Chief Norman Bowers to show cause why he should not be enjoined against discrimination allegedly directed against Charles S. Weinstein, of Fall River, and Mr. Weinstein’s firm, the Trans-American Spinning Mills, Inc.
The suit was filed on Mr. Weinstein’s behalf by Edward J. Barshak, counsel for the New England region of the American Jewish Congress. According to the injunction petition, Chief Bowers has refused to grant Mr. Weinstein a Sunday work permit, solely on the ground that Mr. Weinstein’s mill is closed on Saturdays. Mr. Weinstein contends that enterprises which do stay open on Saturdays are granted Sunday work permits by the Fall River police chief.
