Three major American Jewish organizations active in the fields of human relations, today endorsed President Johnson’s civil rights message and urged prompt Congressional action based on the President’s proposed new civil rights bill.
Expressing the support of their organizations in messages to the President were Bertram H. Gold, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, Dore Schary, national chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, and Howard M. Squadron, chairman of the Commission on Law and Social Action of the American Jewish Congress.
Mr. Gold declared in a telegram to President Johnson: “Your civil rights message spells out long overdue steps needed to enable all Americans to achieve the good life, liberty and pursuit of happiness that is our birthright.” Mr. Schary expressed the hope that “Congress will respond without delay to your call to act upon this urgently needed and vital legislation, the enactment of which is essential if our constitutional guarantees of equal justice and equality of opportunity are to be made meaningful for all Americans.” Mr. Squadron asked the President to support efforts in Congress to combine in a single bill his recommendations on fair housing and enforcement of the fair employment law with the pending civil rights protection act now in the Senate.
