The 34 national and local Jewish agencies associated in the National Community Relations Advisory Council today hailed the U.S. Supreme Court decision on restrictive covenants as “a further blow against racial and religious ghettoes in American life.” The decision made on June 15, prevents enforcement of racial and religious restrictive covenants by awarding money damages.
In a joint statement, the Jewish groups declared that the decision of the Court “will greatly, discourage efforts to evade the landmark decision of 1948 in which the Court held that racial restrictive covenants could not be enforced by court action.”
The organizations making this statement had filed a brief as “a friend of the Court” in this case. The organizations include: the American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, Union of Hebrew Congregations, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, United Synagogue of America, and 28 local Jewish community councils throughout the United States.
