The American Jewish Committee, expressing “deep shock” at the anti-Semitic demonstration in West Berlin cabled an offer to “assist in any way we can” to Heinz Galinski, leader of the Jewish community in Berlin. The message was signed by Irving Mr. Engel, committee president.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, urged the United States Government to make certain that in agreements to be concluded with West Germany there be “iron-clad” assurance that energetic measures would be taken against any revival of anti-Semitism and ultra-nationalism.
Adolf Held, chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee, cabled Ernst Charnovsky, president of the Berlin Federation of Unions lauding him for lodging an immediate protest against an anti-Semitic rally held under the auspices of the German Party in West Berlin. “This development,” Mr. Held said in his cable, “is certain to do tremendous harm to the painstaking efforts made during the past years toward creating the conditions when a free and democratic Germany can take her place among the freedom-loving family of nations.”
