A warning that no funds should be contributed for the transfer of 70,000 Rumanian Jews to Palestine or other places of refuge before American Jewish organizations establish whether Rumania has really made an offer to release Jews from the internment camps in Transnistria, was issued here today by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress.
“The American Jewish Congress, dealing with the matter in conjunction with other Jewish organizations wishes to state that no confirmation has as yet been received regarding this alleged offer of the Rumanian Government to allow 70,000 Jews in Transnistria to leave Rumania,” the warning scads. “The matter is being dealt with by the American Emergency Committee for Zionist Affairs, the American Jewish Congress, and other organizations, and investigations are being made as to the possibility of securing the removal of these Jews from Rumania and obtaining refuge for them either in Palestine or other countries. Before the situation has been clarified, no collection of funds for this undertaking would seem justified.”
