A resolution calling upon all Jewish fraternal and benevolent organizations to double their support of the United Jewish Appeal this year was adopted here today at a conference of the Council of Organizations of the UJA attended by more than 2,000 delegates.
“Aside from raising funds necessary to meet the daily needs of the newcomers to Israel and of the Jews in the danger spots of the world.” the resolution said, “every organization must make an effort to aid the people of Israel by helping build social and communal institutions in the new settlements, or at least by assuming minimum responsibility for at least one housing unit for a roofless, homeless newly immigrated family in Israel. These projects will help enhance the spiritual and cultural as well as the physical life of the communities.”
Dr. Giora Josephthal. Jewish Agency treasurer, addressing the delegates, said that in order to help protect refugee newcomers to Israel from attack by Arab infiltrators, the Jewish Agency will use funds raised by the 1954 United Jewish Appeal campaign to construct access roads to 160 isolated border settlements in which immigrants are starting left anew as farmers. The Jewish Agency also providing fencing and floodlights needed as a defense measure against nightly forays across the armistice lines by Arab bands bent on plunder and destruction.
“I am well aware that security problems generally are not connected with UJA.” Dr. Josephthal said. “Yet we have assumed responsibility for the safety of every man woman and child we settle in new areas. We owe them maximum security against attack by infiltrators.”
