Jewish Hero Appointed Chief of Security Police in France; Won Honors in World War Ii

Robert Hirsch, 38-year-old French Jewish war hero and police prefect of the Department of Charente Maritime since 1947, has been appointed Director-General of the French Surate Nationals, the French security police. He will be in charge of all police in France except the Paris metropolitan area and will be responsible for counter-espionage and general intelligence.

Hirsch, a professional soldier, left the army with the rank of major after being awarded the Gnoix de Guorro, the Resistance Medal and the Legion of Honor for his services in World War II.
