The founding of a Brazilian Jewish Institute for Historical Research was announced here today by Prof. Arnold Wiznitzer, noted Brazilian historian, and Aron Neumann, editor and publisher of Aonde Vamos, Jewish weekly.
Associated with them on the board of the Institute are a number of writers, educators, and religious and lay leaders of the Jewish community. The organization will publish a magazine in Hebrew and Portuguese, will sponsor seminars in Jewish history and will collect’ and file documents of all sorts pertaining to the history of the Jews of Brazil.
In the announcement it was pointed out that the history of the Jews of Brazil is intimately connected with the economic and cultural history of the country. Jews were among the first explorers and settlers of Brazil and the Jewish community is over 300 years old. The first major poet and playwright of Brazil was a Jew as were many of its early physicians.
