“Friendly internees” confined in camps in Australia, after having been brought here from the United Kingdom, will be used for war work on a voluntary basis, it was announced here today by Army Minister Francis M. Forde.
According to Mr. Forde’s announcement, the decision to use the refugees, most of whom are Jewish, for war activities followed assurances from the British Government that the majority of them were friendly to the Allied cause. The men, it was announced, will be used in labor corps, while those under eighteen years old will be taught occupations. Women internees and aged and infirm men will also be released providing that they have adequate means of support.
