Charges that a Democratic State Assembly candidate has caused the distribution of “vicious, anti-Seinitic leaflets” in front of Catholic churches, in an effort to defeat another Democrat who is Jewish, were made here by the Jewish candidate today. Both are Democratic candidates in today’s Primary elections.
Involved are Hyman J. Greenberg, a Jew, and James McGinniss, both of Queens, one of the boroughs of New York City. According to Mr. Greenberg, the leaflets, printed in red, were passed out in front of Catholic churches in Queens last Sunday and “directly and by innuendo cast aspersions on the Jewish people.” The leaflets, said Mr. Greenberg, were designed “to tell the people that it’s a Jew named Greenberg who is running.”
The leaflets also stated: “Would you want Liberty Avenue to become a Pitkin Avenue every Sunday? We would not” Pitkin Avenue is a main thoroughfare in Brownsville, a section of Brooklyn, where many Sabbath-observing Jewish storekeepers keep their shops open on Sundays.
