The extension of Marshall Plan aid to Israel was urged at the State Department today by a Jewish Labor Committee delegation, which was received by Undersecretary of State James E. Webb.
The delegates, headed by Adolph Held, national chairman of the J.L.C., submitted a memorandum reporting the impressions of their recent visit to Europe and Israel. The memorandum pointed out that there is no danger of Communism in the Jewish state. “This subversive ideology has gained no foothold in Israel and never will, unless, of course, the economic situation should deteriorate to a point of desperation,” the memorandum emphasized.
In asking for the extension of Marshall Plan aid to Israel, the delegation said that by helping Israel to solve its economic problems, the United States could exert political, diplomatic and moral influence for a stable peace in the Middle East. “We are convinced that Israel is destined to play a decisive role in strengthening democracy and raising the standards of living for the people in that area,” the memorandum added.
