Action by federal authorities to curb racial violence in the United States and prevent repetition of “Florida incidents” was demanded here last night by Jacob S. Potofsky, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union, addressing a dinner of the National Urban League at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. He called upon Attorney General J. Howard McGrath to insure religious and civil liberties.
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois, speaking at the dinner, said: “Bigotry, intolerance, race violence and the social tensions they engender are not only serious handicaps upon our strength and unity as a nation, but they are a visible encumbrance on America’s leadership in the world. where we must lead or lose.”
