Jewish Leaders and Pro-carol Editor See New Attacks on Jews Expected in Autumn

The Roumanian government could put an end to the anti-Semitic outbreaks if it so desired but it does not want to do so, was the unanimous opinion expressed by prominent Jewish leaders here of all shades of political opinion beginning with Dr. William Filderman, president of the Federation of Roumanian Jews, who is a Liberal, and ending with Senator Meyer Ebner of Czernowitz, a supporter of the Maniu government.

These Jewish leaders, who were queried by the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, agree that after the statement of the minister of the interior, Dr. Vayda Voevod, to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, that military force would be used if necessary to suppress the anti-Jewish attacks, and the impeachment of the anti-Semitic government official M. Tazladanu as well as the arrest of Zelea Codreanu the outbreaks are likely to be discontinued for a while but they may begin again in the Fall.

This belief is supported by Panfil Sheikare, editor of the “Cuvantul,” a pro-Carol paper, and a member of Parliament, who writes in his paper today that “we have definite information that anti-Semitic outbreaks of a violent nature will recur in the Autumn. Dr. Vayda Voevod, speaking to the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, made assurances for order which we consider sincere, although we think they came too late.

“If the government is really ready to show active will-power it ought to do it in such a way that nothing will happen, even in the future, otherwise the expected anti-Jewish events in the Fall may lead to such anarchy that Dr. Vayda Voevod will not be able to suppress it even with military force”.

In connection with the forthcoming trial of Zeal Codreanu, anti-Semitic leader now under arrest, M. Tazladanu, the impeached anti-Semitic official of the ministry of the interior, today asked Professor Mitschesku, famous lawyer and dean of the All-Roumanian Lawyers’ Association, to defend Codreanu. Professor Mitschesku flatly refused, saying he would never defend anti-Semitic leaders.

The police today finally discovered the secret publishing plant of the anti-Semitic organization, the Iron Guard, from which all the anti-Semitic posters and manifestos were being printed.

In the meantime a number of the Jewish members of Parliament, including Theodor Fisher and Senator Ebner, considering that the Jewish situation has now quieted down more or less, have left Bucharest for a vacation. Dr. William Filderman is leaving next week.
